Basic Woodworking Terms To Understand
If you are someone who is just getting started in woodworking, the first step is to learn the basic terminology. Doing so will make it easier to understand plans and blueprints, and help you communicate with others when doing woodworking projects. By learning at least the most basic woodworking terms to start, you’ll be able to follow easy woodworking projects properly and have less chance of injuring yourself. Though there are hundreds of woodworking terms, several terms are more important to know because they are the most common.
The term linear foot is one often used in do it yourself woodworking projects, and refers to the measurement of a board. Miter gauge is the name for a specific tool, one that can be slid in to use on a variety of power tools from a table saw to a router table. This helps stabilize the wood while also cutting it at an angle. It will also tell you what angle the wood needs to be cut at.
Check is another basic woodworking term that is worth knowing. It is a split in the wood lengthwise that happened during the drying process. A collet is the bit holding device that is used on routers as well as CNC milling machines. A joiner is a woodworking term that refers to a machine that straightens the edges of a board, typically to prepare it for gluing.
Milling is cutting the lumber from logs, and the term kickback refers to any board which has been thrown back towards the operator by the machine. This could cause a very dangerous situation especially when the wood is thick, heavy, and comes back forcefully. A kickback occurs when a board being cut on a machine gets thrown back off the machine, towards the operator. Regardless of the cause of the kickback, if you’re not wearing appropriate safety gear or get hit in the wrong spot, you could get seriously injured.
The above are just several of many basic woodworking terms to get familiarized with before beginning projects. Not knowing these terms will lead to mistakes, frustration, and increase the risk of injury. Woodworking for most is supposed to fun and an outlet for using creativity. From building birdhouses to cabinets, the projects you can work out are virtually endless when it comes to woodworking.

mdf shape cutter - anyone help?
I am new to all this but want to buy a machine that can cut out mdf shapes, letters, numbers using a computer? Any ideas which one is the best? CNC router maybe?
Thanks
Depends how much you want pay and how much work you have got/expect! A CNC and software would be very expensive.
If you are only just starting it would be better to spend your "free" time cutting out by hand to make sure you are making saleable products in volume!
Yes it will take you a long time compared to a machine but if you find the market you are aiming at isn't there you haven't gone into serious debt!
I am a busy DIYer and use my power router both by hand and in a router base to cut out various shapes for our house/garden. I also have (secondhand from eBay) a small horizontal planer and belt/disc sander which allow me to shape wood/MDF.
Best of Luck - hope you win out.
