Finding Fitness In The Great Outdoors
If all you're looking for is muscle growth or a general workout, then going to the gym is fine. Many people, however, feel like gyms don't give them the kind of exercise they really want. These people crave the outdoors and the thrills that come from outdoor activities. These types of people often lose interest in going to the gym.
Even if you're not one of the lucky ones who lives near a national park or even a large city park, you can still find time for the outdoors. You don't have to wait until your vacation comes and you can escape to the wilderness. However you can do it, make sure you can get outdoors regularly.
One way that city dwellers and suburbanites can enjoy the feeling of being outdoors is on a bicycle. There's a great feeling of exhilaration racing down a hill after the challenge of a steep hill climb, whether it's on a backwoods trail or a back street in the city. A Schwinn mountain bike or other MB, often has 24 gears and disc brakes, making it possible to climb the steepest hill or stop on a dime.
Naturally, the downside of riding a bike in the city is that you always have to keep an eye on the traffic. There are dangers associated with riding offroad, too, but especially in the city, you'd be crazy not to wear a helmet.
Head injuries are the cause of most bicycle fatalities, so don't even think about not wearing a helmet. Choose a black helmet or any other color you like. Just wear a helmet.
That's as true for offroad as it is on the city streets. If you fall off a mountain bike at any speed, you can get a serious or even fatal head injury if you're not wearing a helmet. If you've got a helmet, though, you can ride your mountain bike with abandon, knowing your head is safe.
If mountain biking doesn't appeal to you, then hiking or rock climbing may. If you're doing either of these, the right footwear is essential. Hikers should wear sturdy boots with no slip soles. Rock climbers wear special shoes that fit tightly and have sticky soles for gripping on stone.
The bottom line is this: get outdoors. For your overall health and fitness, nothing can beat the outdoors.
How can I change my grip shift and put on rapid fire shifters?
I want to buy rapid fire shifters for my Raleigh M20, but dont know how to take of the grip shift. Also can I change my pad brakes to disk brakes.
Changing the shifters is simple, but you'll need to understand how to adjust the derailleurs as well. Here's a link to Sram's tech docs....they have instructions and diagrams to help you out a lot more than just trying to explain the process. If you visit Shimano's page, they have info there if your new shifters don't have the info with them. http://www.sram.com/en/service/sram/view.php?catID=1&subcatID=8
If you want to go with disk brakes, you need to be sure you have disk-compatible hubs on your wheels, and also that both your frame and fork have the necessary mounting tabs for the calipers. If they don't, then you'll be spending more money than the bike is worth to upgrade the brakes. In that case, I'd recommend buying a new bike instead....you'll get more bang for your buck and have mostly modern components instead of a retrofitted older bike.
Also, keep this in mind: decent-quality v-brakes that are well adjusted and using good pads, will stop very very well. Disks do stop better, but there's nothing wrong with v-brakes unless you're doing long downhills or riding in wet/muddy/gritty conditions. It might be worthwhile to just set up your v-brakes correctly, possibly changing to a better quality lever if the ones you have are flexy.
Hope this helps.
