Top 10 Woodworking Tools
When starting out with woodworking the number of tools available to the woodworker can be daunting. When starting out with woodworking it is not necessary to purchase a large complement of tools with, only a few essential tools required for the vast majority of projects. Below is a list of the essential tools that any woodworking kit should have (in no particular order):
• Tenon Saw: The tenon saw is a general purpose saw that gives you great control which allows you to not only undertake general cuts but also finer cuts.
• Firmer Chisel Set: The basic design and strength of the firmer chisel means it can be used for a range of jobs and it is recommended that a set of these be purchased.
• Files: There are range of files that can be purchased ranging from very coarse to very fine and they are used to finish off projects.
• Steel Rule: The steel rule is not easily damaged and therefore allows the woodworker to mark precisely every time.
• Combination Square: The combination square features a 45 degree angle, 90 degree angle, spirit level and metal ruler, making it the ideal purchase when starting out.
• Smoothing Plane: There are a number of planes that can be purchased, however, if only one can be bought then I recommend the smoothing plane as it has a blade that can be adjusted for finer work.
• Power Drill: Despite the fact that there is a large range of power drills available in a various shapes, sizes and features, only a basic model is required.
• G-clamp: The G-clamp has a very basic design with a casting that has a screw at one end that applies pressure and is available in a variety of sizes.
• Claw Hammer: This is the most popular hammer and most people should already have one in their home, and is used for both hammering nails and removing nails.
• Beech Mallet: If you are using chisels then a beech mallet is essential, it can also be used to tap together pieces of wood.
By buying the above tools you can complete the vast majority of woodworking projects, however, you can always purchase other tools such as the ones found at: Woodworking Tools
Why is there usually a hole in the blade of meat cleavers?
I just read the wiki page and it doesn't really go into detail.
Anybody know why there is usually a hole in the blade of meat cleavers?
Most of them (even antique/vintage) seem that the hole was put in after the blade itself was made, cut or drilled.
What is its purpose?
This is blue-sky thinking for the heck of it. You could enable hanging by drilling a hole in the handle or by attaching a loop to the handle. My notion is that the hole might serve to break a vacuum caused around the blade by its embedding - thus making removal easier. The notion was inspired by experience of chopping logs. It's a darn sight harder to get the axe out than it is to drive it in.
