Scott Sportster Range Part 1
The Scott Sportster range can be a bit confusing - there are a lot of options to choose from. In this first part we take a look at the lowest priced models in the range - the Sportster 60, 55, 50 and 40.
First off, it's useful to point out that the higher specification models have the lower model numbers, and vice versa. So therefore the Sportster 60 is the entry-level model, and the 40 the highest-spec bike in this group.
All four are available in mens and womens versions – each version of a particular model differing in:-
· Frame geometry.
· Handlebar – more bend in the womens version.
· Saddle – for obvious reasons…
Everything else – components, weight, price etc is identical between the mens and womens versions of each model. The main differences between the models fall into three areas - the front fork, the gear components and the brakes.
All of the Scott Sportster range are built onto the same frame, constructed in 6061 aluminium. The tubing is double-butted for strength, with nicely tapered top and down tubes. The paint finish and graphics look fantastic. The frame will take mudguards and rack if you wish.
Sportster 60. This is the range's basic model. It’s the only model to have a steel fork. Gear components come from Shimano's basic Tourney and Acera MTB range.. The 7-speed cassette and triple chainrings give you 21 gears. Selection is by Shimano EZ_Fire shifters. These are very intuitive - just click up and down the gears using the two small levers. The gear you're in is shown on the indicator. The shifters are integrated with the brake levers, operating Scott’s own V-brakes.
The handlebars on the womens bikes are some 10mm longer and have a bit more bend, but both are aluminium. There is no compromise on quality in the saddles either, as the two styles of saddle are fitted to all the bikes in the range.
The tyres are semi-slick, which mean that the centre of the tyre is smooth, so ideal for the road, but there is tread on the sides for grip on grass or gravel.
The flat pedals and chainguard will suit most people - as most cycling is done in ordinary clothes and shoes. No need for lycra and cleats.
Weighing 12.4 kg, this is not as light as some, but it carries quality components and is robust enough to withstand anything you can subject it to. It’s a fantastic value Scott bike.
Sportster 50. This is the next up the range. In nearly all aspects this is the same as the 60. The frame, wheels, tyres and handlebars remain the same. Two notable upgrades are seen. First of these is the suspension fork, ideal for coping with paths and tracks. The second is the 8-speed cassette – there’s no change to the derailleurs, but you now get 24 gears. The pedals are also of a somewhat better quality.
At 13.2kg the 50 carries a bit more weight than the 60 due to the heavier forks. However I think that the upgrades to fork and gears are well worth the extra money.
Sportster 55. The following model has only one difference from the 50, and that's the brakes. The 55 has mechanical disc brakes by Shimano in place of the V-brakes fitted to the other models. The discs are especially suited to off road, as they keep the mud out of the braking surfaces. Otherwise the 55 shares the same components as the 50. The upgrade to discs will cost you only a little more.
Sportster 40. Just as the 55 is designed more for off-road use, the 40 will be more at home on the road. The tyres are narrower, at 35mm. These, along with the upgraded front fork will improve the abilities of the bike on the road. Both gear mechs are better quality. A 9-speed cassette now gives the bike 27 gears. The 40 goes back to V-brakes, with significant weight saving. Don't forget though that this bike is still able to take you off road quite happily.
These upgrades result in a noticeable increase in the price. This has a level of specification however that would be hard to find elsewhere at that sort of price. It's superb value for money.
So this Scott Sportster review hopefully shows that there is a bike for everyone in the range. The choice depends on budget and the type of riding you want to do.
