A DIY Woodworking Plan For A Bird Feeder
Woodworking is not only a fun process to indulge in, but is also a great vehicle to express individual creativity. There is an endless list of different do it yourself woodworking projects you could get started with, one of the simplest for a bird feeder. Whether woodworking is a hobby or if it's something that you would to become highly skilled at, beginners should start off with simple a do-it-yourself woodworking project. This means taking on something simple so you don't feel overwhelmed.
You can choose a very basic bird feeder plan to begin with. All you need is use cedar wood, shingles, dowel, window screen, some glue, and deck screws to hold everything together. First, you drill the holes so the birds can get access to the feed. Then you want to drill about a 1 ¼” hole centered about four inches up from the bottom. A smaller hole, about 1/4 inches, should be placed right about the larger one.
Make sure when you’re cutting your pieces that you always measure twice and cut once. If you make a mistake, make sure that you cut a piece too large as opposed to too short; you can always cut off the extra material, but you can't add it back on. Both sides of the feeder can be 1-1/2 x 6 inches, and the front is slightly bigger at 1-1/2 x 8 inches. The next step is then putting all the pieces together.
Once you have all the pieces in place, then you can joint each part together and build out your bird feeder. Countersink two holes in the back which you’ll use to mount the sides and glue the two sides onto the back. While applying glue, hold for 10 seconds to be sure that pieces are well attached. Once all the pieces have been put together, pound two nails at the joinings for additional security.
After attaching the front and bottom, then you can add nails. All you need to do now is nail the stake onto the back and put the bird feeder outside in the ground. Then glue the bird feeder and the stake together, and hammer in a few more nails if necessary. As you get more experience and build your woodworking skills, you can start working on more advanced projects.
