Get Your Glassware Looking Perfect Again
It is one of those annoying problems that lots of people face. A great set of wine glasses, a glass coffee table or a favorite vase has picked up some scratches and looks old and tired. You would be amazed just how many people throw the bit of glassware out, even though with a little work it could be made as good as new. All that is needed is a few tools and bit of helpful information.
1.) Trying to rub the scratch out using harsh abrasives will not work. This may work on wood, but on your favorite whisky glass, you’ll end up with a horrible opaque patch that will look even worse and be even more difficult to remove. A fine abrasive is what you need, and the experts tend to use something like cerium oxide. Any good jewelers will stock this type of abrasive.
2.) A polishing wheel is the next thing that you'll need. This is form of spin buffer that has a soft pad and is fitted onto a hand drill. When abrasive is added to the pad and it spins up against the glass surface, it buffs any marks away. Make sure you clean the polishing wheel first as any dirt in it will just lead to more scratching. The drill should not be used on a high setting as the pressure on the glass may be too large. Crystal glass is stronger and so can withstand higher spin speeds.
3.) Scratches that cover a large area or are quite serious will need something a bit more substantial for repair. In most cases you can use a resin to fill in deep scratches and you can pick this up from DIY shops and specialist glassware shops. You’ll need to ensure that the resin you use has the same refractive index as the glass, otherwise it will stand out like a sore thumb, especially on crystal vases and glassware. Once you have filled the scratch, you can then use the fine abrasive and polishing wheel to smooth the glass off.
Is it worth buying a new engine for an old boat?
My dad has an old 1960's Grumman aluminum boat. 16 foot. It would still shine up pretty good with a buffing wheel. But would it be worth putting a new engine on it? Or just get a used one?
Also, it was rated for 25 hp. Could I safely put a 30 - 40 hp motor on it? It has a steering wheel and lever engine control. The hull is pretty heavy duty, thick aluminum, transom is solid.
If you plan on keeping the boat forever then you could buy a new engine, but like the other guy said maybe try to find a late model 2 stroke. The reason being is they are lighter and produce more power than a 4 stroke. Also, I would not put a larger engine on the boat. Prior to about 1990-1991 they rated the hp at the flywheel not at the prop like today. So a newer 25hp would be like a 30hp back then. Hope that helps.
