How Gem Costs Are Figured Out
Brought to you by cheaper cushion cut engagement rings. Pricing most products is quite easy. Determine how much it costs to make the item, how much it costs to market that item, and then mark it up by 15 - 30% or more. Simple, right? Well, pricing Diamonds isn't quite that simple. There are many factors that are considered when Gems are priced.
Gems prices are determined first by adding the cost of the rough Diamond Gems, the cost of cutting the Diamonds, and all other costs necessary to turn the rough Gems into a marketable Diamonds. Depending on the importance of the Gems, an independent company may be called in to certify the grade of the Gems based on colour, cut, clarity, and weight.
At this point, the Gems becomes more expensive each time it changes hands, until it finally reaches a retailer, where the price is raised a bit more. Before reaching the retailer, however, the Diamond Gems must travel from the mine, to the cutter and polisher, to the independent grading company, and then to the Primary market. Once it has reached the primary market, it will be purchased by Diamonds dealers and wholesalers, and from there it will be sold to retailers.
As you can see, the earlier you can purchase a Diamond Gems in the process, the lower the cost of the Diamonds will be - but not the value. The value is based on what the Gems will sell for in the market place - through a retailer.
If you own a Diamonds, and you have no idea how much it is worth, you can have it appraised, but the appraisal may not be accurate. You will be better off obtaining a certificate through GIA - Gemological Institute of America. With the information on this certificate, you can use a cutter's guide to accurately determine what your Diamonds is worth.
There are also many Diamonds price calculators available. These can be found on the Internet, and many Diamond Gems dealers use these as well. You must realize, however, that before you can accurately price a Gems, without a Diamond Gems Grade Report, you need to know quite a bit about Diamonds, such as different cuts, clarity, colour, and weight - and how each of those aspects adds to the value of a Gems, or decreases the value of the Diamonds as the case may be.
Again, you will be better off if you get a Diamonds Grading Report on the Diamonds, and use that information to look up the price in one of the guides that the Gems cutting industry uses. This will give you the most accurate value of the Diamonds in your possession, or of the Diamond Gems you are considering purchasing.

Can a wood router, with suitable bit and jig, remove a layer of rust from my cast iron drill press table?
The important thing is that the drill press table remain absolutely flat, so I envisage a jig using two parallel steel bars, which support the router, and between which the router can also move from side to side to cover the entire surface. What type of bit/cutter is required for a router with an 8mm collet. THANKS!!!!
Would'nt use a router as a way to "mill" the table surface .
Have an unheated garage workshop & rust is a problem.
I use a sanding disc w/ scotchbrite pads instead of paper.
They do not "cut" the metal & just scrub surface rust off.
Been doing it for years & no problem w/ keeping tool surfaces true.
I use them dry & then coat the cast table surfaces w/ pastewax to protect the raw metal between uses.
Found it to be better than coating w/ oil or silicone spray .

Not True, But Apparently Plausible, For Infamous Cost-Cutter Ryanair
Passengers on a recent Ryanair flight thought the airline's cost-cutting had
gone a bit too far when they saw their 737 having what looked like duct tape
applied to the cockpit windscreen. Given the image Ryanair has cultivated for
itself, with proposals such as pay toilets on planes and creating special new
seats to allow standing on flights, the use of duct tape on a plane probably
fit right in.
